The Carnegie Foundation categorizes the 1478 four-year institutions in the United States into these groups:

57     BA/AA Colleges  (4%)  (at least 10% baccalaureate degrees)
321   BA Colleges—General  (22%)  (fewer than half of degrees in liberal arts)
228  BA Colleges—Liberal Arts  (15%)  (more than half in liberal arts)
115  MA Colleges and Universities 2  (8%)  (20+ MA degrees offered)

     This stratified sample of 100 English majors is comprised of institutions randomly selected from these categories in a proportional manner.  Two BA/AA college and two BA general institutions did not have an English major and were dropped from the sample. Terms such as “Literature” are capitalized when they are used by a department for its major
