Image 5:  Alma-Tadema's Phidias and the Frieze of the Parthenon.

alma-tadema.jpg (50206 bytes)

Painted in 1868, this painting offers an imaginative reconstruction of what it might have been like when Phidias, the architect of the Parthenon, was having the friezes cut, installed, and painted.  Note that the observers are up on scaffolding and that the sculpture was not left raw but was painted.
